  January 1st 1804 Wind E. & begun to Snow & rain about 6 OC. Soon got to rain without Snow & had a wet day Molly at Meeting I a littl[e] while at Yerkus s Spent not aReading the history of England George

Jany. 2nd 1804 Wind S W & fine day to be shure very pleasant at Rees puting hand Rails up &c

3 Wind N E & Rainey Morn of[f] to Mothers to kill hogs So wet put it off, after at work at Rees, Quit about noon Raining

4 Wind N W & fine morn but blue up before noon & froze very hard before night at Mothers helpt to kill 9 fine hogs, Dun by Dinner 2 OC perhaps home and at Rees Prices

5th Wind N W & prety Cold at Rees all day at work at Stairs Cut the first myter of hand Rail too Short Distresst me much but Glud it & made it doo as well as If it had not happened--

6th Wind N W & fine day at Rees at work Jont. Jones their Came with him to Yerkus s & spent 11d. Seen Nice, one of Yerkus s Assignees, Showd him the artical of agreeament between Yerkus & Phillip a team he sold Phillip assinees [assignees] took it So Spent 1/4 day

7th Wind S W & a lovely day Dilbury [Disbury] & Felix moveing dung from barn door I helping part of day & at Rees s Atkenson Came for his Stair Case plain home & Dined with me he off & I at dung.

8th Wind N E & very wet day, Cold, at Meeting being first day afternoon at Yerkus mug beer 11d so home & Read history of England, the begining french war in America 1755 &c &c


January 9th 1804 Wind N E & Raind & Some hail till noon then wind to West & two or 3 snow showers at Rees s work at stairs Glude up the Rails & begun to put the Bannesters up Eat Dinner at Rees Prices Paid the old Painter 9s- for putt[ing] in Rees s Dormant Glass[e]s 2d per Light 54 Lights Like for Cold Star Light & is awindy Could [cold] night

10th. Wind N W & very high & Cold froze hard at Rees Price awhile work none, up to Jarvis's to Get him Goo to town tomorrow back & over at turnpike See how they Come on with the well, bad Diging, blue one blast to day did much back & Calld to See Mother's Stayd till near 9 OC--

11th Wind N W & high & Cold Dam froze hard the third time this winter, Schuylkill froze over at bridge & very full of Ice at Righters, Jarvis & I in town, Loaded Rees Price's wagon 1100 feet boards [for] his new house, this Load makes 5000 perhaps 2 or 3 hundred feet boards besides as many nearly I Sawd for the 3 floors, I Bought 51/2 lb Tobacco 7s 111/2 & 2 Chisels & 2 plow Irons 4s5- fish 1s101/2, Spe[c]tacles 7s6 the first I Ever Bout. my Sight fails much at night but Must Exspect it turnd of 50 years 2 doz Glass 15s--Horse &c 3s-- at Elliots, he has had alight Fitt of Polsey I am very [2 words obscured]

Clever honest man, keep Tavern Several years in 4 st. Cross keys, I allways put up their, ferry 8 Cents pike 6 Cents Jarvis & me, paid Joe Evans 3 Dollars for work, Gave Molley 15 Dollars, got 57 Dolrs 68 Cents of Drake for Rent & [backward dollar sign] 17..32 Cents yet due for Last Quarter Rent due 1st Jany Spent 111/4 at Olivers where Sarah Dyer useed [used] to Live, & 1s101/2 at Yerkus So home about 8 OC [interlined:"1 D. 90 for Bords for Tobias's Cupboard"]

12th Wind N W More Moderate fine day at Rees's in Morn no work,[interlined:"Tom to Linsey to fullers"] then over at pike, Some Little appearance of water about 35 feet deep home to Dinner about 3 O'Clock, from thence at and about home

Wind N W. & over Cast Snowd about 1/2 Inc[h] this Morn but Cleard off about noon fine Yerkus & I over turn pike, Got fine Spring water in the new well End of kitchen one John Drakes work's it well from thence at Kuglars treated with 1 M Beer thence to Warners meet Henderson Elliot R Roberts & Severall their Spent 1s101/2 So home & sup or Drank tea with Yerkus So home work till noon at R. Prices home to Dinner, John Evans begun work for first time this week, we have Got the Bannesters most all up

January 16th 1804 Wind Sout[h] white frost prety Sharp at Rees's in Morn, then to pike they at work at well meet Jones Dine'd with him he down with me at Morris's he pd his poor tax, he Drank Some Whiskey with me, at Yerkus's Stayd & Drank tea their, he treated us with Gin &c &c Spent 111/4 home about 8 OC a Great dispute between J. Jones & Jarvis which was the Best Latten Scholar--

17th Wind S E & begun about 7 OC this Morn to Rain Very hard Till about 12 OC wind N W Raind no more 2 or 3 Shower of Snow Disbury & Washer tharsh'd [thrashed] about 8 Doz Rye, had 4 Bushels I help to Clean it at Rees mornin[g] & afternoon Work none, Starn at front doorsash, blue up hard & Cold freezing hard

18th Wind N W & very windy, blue a herrican & very Cold, at Rees Price's back to Dinner then at Drakes, no well digers their too Cold went off back at Mothers, their heard of Joseph Davis's wife's death, She was a roades [Rhoades], I at their weding at Streaper or Yerkus 1 pint beer 51/2 So home wind fell But will fre[e]ze hard [interlined: "Disbury & Felix finished tharshing my Rye"]

19th Wind S.E & over Cast, then seem to brake of[f] & got warmer Disbury & Felix Cleand my Rye 11 B then Cuting wood, begun to Snow & keep at it till night 21/2 Deep Yerkus 3 teams halling Ice, perhaps 6 I thick


January 20th 1804 when it Comes Wind N.W & very Cold, Disbury helping Yerkus to hall Ice I am to pay him I off about 8 OC to Jos Davis's wife burial, She was a Rhoades, I was at their Weding about 22 years ago, She has not had a Child this 7 years Viz her youngest 7 years old, She now was deliverd of a Son & she Livd but 3 days after She was 44 years old, a remarkable Circumstance, She Should [interlined;"be pregnant or Be fruitfull"] so old Buried at Spring feild had a good Sermon by Eli Yarnal, Dine'd at Joseph's house, Lewis Davis Jos. Father alive in his 88[th year] & his wife 86 years, She Stout and about but he is took to his bead [bed] this few weeks home about dark

January 22nd 1804 Wind N E & over Cast & all the appearance of snow being first day at home only at Morris's alittle while, begun to Snow about Sunset very Cold & blue much Snowd very fast before bed time Reading history England about the french war in america in 1755.&--

23rd Wind N by E & Snowing very much Till near noon then seen the sun after Wind N. & Snowd all the afternoon Cleard after night, the snow in woods they say about 1 feet 3 I. but very drifted in the Clear feilds very Cold Starn & Evans at work at Rees s I & Moses their aWhile but work none for them Whet a Wood saw &c &c--

24. Wind N. fine Clear day Snow tho Melted or thawd but very little over at Drakes & fetch'd my slay runers home & halld 2 Little Jags of wood home put the Slay together, at Rees awhile at Yerkus Tobias Hoffman Gave me 4 partridge I treated him Glass Toddy 111/4


January 25th 1804 Wind N W and very sharp morning & very pleasant day, Disbury & Felix Cut 3 hickory trees bare 1/2 day, I Got Rees Price's Oxen & widow's sledge & halld 3 Load of wood all they Cut Except 2 Logs, Evening Titus Yerkus put his horses in my slay & we went to Lainhoofs Lane, Stop to See old Molley Streaper (so Calld) Bout. mug beer 111/4 & 51/2 for Cakes, Lent the Slay to Price's boys; not been at the new house to Day, so Ended this day; & hope I went not much astray But spent it in a Reasonable way (Except the slay)

26th Wind N. & Sharp mor[n]ing white frost at the new Building awhile then over to Dam, Drake Sett 2 men to Quarry Stone for well, it so froze Could not make any out agreed with them to meet tomorrow & wall the Stone we have Got as far as they will goo, and at same [time] I was to Look out for more, Drake here in a great Passion, because I turn'd the men off we bouth Got prety high but Calmd down & made up after Titus Yerkes & Wife I and Do.[ditto] & George an[d] Ann in slay up to Bill Streapers Stopt not only Bout 51/2 worth of Cakes at old Molleys Turne pike Gate 7 Cents had Bulley rock my Large Gray horse first time he went very brave-- Eclips the moon


January 27th.1803 [1804] Wind N & Sharp morn white frost Breakfasted & over to Drakes, She Drake's wife affronted the well digers & they Gone before I got their, I of[f] to Isaac Roberts Quarry & Got Liberty to hall 20 perch of Stone for well at Jont Walters he Says he hall tomorrow so home to Dinner a painter by the name of Weaver Glassing 2 Cirkeler Sash for turnpike at the Grove-- [JP is now calling the former William Penn the "Grove".] afternoon at the new Building, Saml Star[n] [took] my horse to town to Get a Cornish plain for frontispeice Heard of the Death of Lewis Davis, Mothers Brother to be buried first day 29th he is or was in his 88[th] year; Bout 6 pains of Glass 10 by 12 Cost 75 Cents-- two 1/2 Jills Gin 111/4d So we goo not at new house to day--

28th Wind N E & Snowd alittle but begun to rain about 6 OC after I Got up & sleated & froze on the trees, but Come so heavy before noon that It Could not all frees, made bad Gooing a very remarkable wet day till about 3 O'C-- then begun to break & Cleard off & blue much, at Yerkus & the new house awhile


January 29th 1804 Wind N W & b[l]ue hard & froze, but not bare a horse where the water was deep, Set off about 9 OC- to Uncle Lewis Davis's burial, Got their before he was Screwd up, stay meeting at Springfeild Eli Yarnal preached much & very Great back & Dine'd at the funeral house, of[f] Stop at Bittles to Jos Walter, Spent 111/4 So home about Dark, perhaps 40 slay at Burial

30th Wind N W. & very fine in Morn but Cloudy about noon & Snow Sharp from West afternight Cleard of[f] & frozed prety hard at Jont Walters, he Lent his horse so hall no stone

31 Wind S W & Large whitefrost, over at Jont. Walters he halld 5 Loads for well Roberts Stone, one Load quarried by pike Company Rest Phelix & Disbury dug, home to Dinner at Yerkes's 1 qt Whis 1s6 & somthing before total 3s9 at new Building Spent 51/2 with Wagoner John [Wagoner] Overseer of poor

Feby. 1st Wind S.W. & a very fine day Like Spring if the snow had not been on the Ground Got the Widows horses shod & put them in slay I took her & 2 boys Mary & our 2 Childern to Uncle Cochrons in slay it has run away much to day slaying most dun they have had aGreat time for slaying & the the [repeated] people have made Great use of it home about dark


February 2nd 1804 Wind S & Got W before noon it was droping of[f] the house in Morn when I Got up, amost butifull day Jont. Walter hall'd 10 Loads of Stone for well at the Grove out of Isaac Roberts Quarry Felix & I dug & help to Load them Got no Dinner nor drink till about sun set Felix Came home with me & Got Dinner I in my shirt sleavs with them Rold up all day, very pleasant, Great wood halling to town Oake 8 Dolrs per Cord hickery 10 to 11 Dolrs. McDormants boys & Girls here in slay, must be bad I think

3rd Wind S.W. & fine day, halld a Small Load of hay from tanyard to barn, then went to Meeting John Torbert & Wife here before meeting She public freind, She Gave a good Lecter & two other woman freinds Spoke after at Mothers Some of them their Jos Hoskins their went with him to Buck Spent 51/2 at Curwens Sup their thence at Torrence to Get him make a pump-- Spent 51/2, so home about 11 O'Clock-

4th Wind at Rees at the Build[ing], back to Dinner not doing Much, Sp[l]it[t]ing wood Evening at Rees's again Spent 1s41/2 so home to tea frozeing prety hard


February 5th 1804 wind N W & Sharp whitefrost froze hard but fine day. of[f] about 8 OC. Calld on Jont. Jones & went to John Sellers Burial from his Late farm in Darby we went to Darby & drank a glass Ginn Sling back & dined at Jont Jones then him & I went to Judg Jones he been Layd up with the Gout, So home about 9 OClock atnight, it has been a fatal time with old people, Ellen Jones perhaps near 80 year Old Mordica Morgan near 90 Lewis Davis in his 88 year John Seller 76

6 Wind N W & fine day at and about home till noon Geting post for fence Tobias Huffman Came to make them afternoon Meet McClenechan at Yerkus, then up to schoolhouse, I Got alittle Gay, & affronted Brison, very much distresst at Such Conduct, & hope through the Lord['s] Mercy to Repent & Reform. 7th Wind S W & avery fine day felix & Disbury Cuting wood I halling with Morris's Sled yesterday was the first time the sheep went from the barn to Look for Grass Since the 22nd of Last month; the Snow Run of[f] Much to day the Sledging Gone, at Morris with the sled Old Young Morris & Jarvis Rode over on the Ice at Righters ferry, Sam [Jarvis] back they to Frankford


February 8th 1804 Wind. S by East over Cast but warm day at Rees new house framing a slate for Ned Walter, & so pottereing about-- heard one of Schoolars [scholars] Swear much to day, at Yerkus Esqr Young Gave me an order on Saml. Evans for 35 Drs He high key I spent not so home-- begun to rain about Dark rain all night I Beleive tho Easy

9th Wind E. but soon N. & seem to Clear but before Noon Snowd very fast from N.W. & Several Showers afternoon, Got Cold & begun to freeze beforenight at Rees s new house then at dam put anew Gate in, pot pye for Dinner then Geard up the Cart & halld 2 Loads of hay from the yard (tan) it blue a herrican almost had to Lay Rails in the barrack to prevent it blowing away Felix helpt me hall one Load. 10th Wind N W & froze very hard & Cold day Disbury & Felix at flax I at Rees Prices makeing a tongue for his Light Wagon their at Dinner home before night


February 11th 1804 Wind N W. Sharp Morn tho fine day Settled with Samuel Starn for 81 days work at Rees Prices at 5s6 per day and one Dollar I was to Give him on acct. of first day diete, or Else he Stud out for 5s71/2 per So I Gaind but 35 Cents by his takeing 5s6 Got 30 Dollars of Rees & the Rest I made up, Sent Tommy With his [Starn's] Tools to Righter ferry, they Cross'd over the Ice but it is Gone along Shore, & Say it brok[e] up about Spring Mill been a smart fresh afternoon at Mothers Drakes with a Circluer Sash for Gable End, after at Jont Jones with apair of Gloves he Lent Me he Came home about 7 OC-- Ann & Martha two Maden sisters very Clever Martha Scenable [sensible] & very Gracefull very agreeable quite fond of her She's Instructing & has keep or visited the best Familys,-- Franklin's Genr Washington's &c-- Ann is a woman of Business very Clever, home about 10 [O]Clock Drank tea with them, Jont. Gentleman


February 12th 1804 Wind S W & a very fine day being first day at home all day herad [heard] the Blue bird Chirping very Lively this Morning, Sundry people here, one qt.Whiskey 1s6 So my money goo.

13th Wind N E froze prety hard, our Court begins To day, very fine day at Drakes put in a Cirkeler sash in the Gable End at pike & one in hall home to Dinner up at Yerkus's Jarvis their he sd General St Clear their, Said he staid all night I Shock [shook] my head aludeing not so Got in a great Rage wy [why] dount [don't] you tell me I Lye, Said I heard he went to Dans his sons but I Lay you a Bottle wine, he was not their he then Calm'd down and it was Over I back fed & Read, & So, most Like Spring Robins about plenty Disbury & Felix Drest 14 lb Flax Felix broke James [Disbury] Swingle'd

February 15th 1804 Wind N.E. & very Cold, froze very hard, tho fine day in the Sun, at Rees put one saddle under one door & Cut the washboards for garret, winding stairs, home to Dinner David Roberts at the new building & made me Call at Yerkus & treated me to Mug bear & I spent one Mug So home, agreed with one weaver [Weaver] to paint Rees Price's house for 40 Dollars David Roberts gooing to build a barn & kitchen at the turnpike the place he Bout & wants me to buy saw his Scantlings; I much deprest for want of Money to pay 8 Dollars I Borr. of Polley Yerkus, & have agood Deal owing to me, If I Could Get it but poor Dunner, a Certain Diffidence about me that is wrong, for Every man ought to have his own, & the Labourer is worth his hire--

16th Wind S by W prety fine day mending plow plain & afternoon at McClenechans he 8 or 10 hands & Moses along Shingling his Lower Mill Moses broke a new hansaw of mine, then up to Saml. Evans with an order of L Youngs for 35 D he not at home met Saml. Jarvis at the Mill he went along at Torrence's he Treated to 3 G-- So home about Dark Invited to Lowrey Wisters funeral in town tomorrow


Feby 17th 1804 Wind E & begun to rain about day & Raind very Smart till noon Got my horse & Self ready to Go to Burial of Wister a sister of Jonat Jones's the first of Owen Jones Childern that has died I heard them say he had 10 Childern & Raisd them all, the youngest I dare say is not under 45 yrs I suppose it was 60 yrs. that had not a funeral out of the family. Edw. Jones a brother wasthe first Old Bachelor & Owen himself in 93 I think with the fever, his widow in 1801 I Beleive But it Raind soo I did not goo, at sawmill to Clear the Ice, & at David Roberts So back

18 Wind W & White frost & very fine day at Saw Mill till noon Got it to Goo the first time since fall Late at Drakes so back to Dinner & Meet the Society Spent 51/2 Got the 10th history of England & So home, & Read till prety Late---

19th Wind S W & a fine day at Meeting afternoon at Yerkus awhile with Jarvis, then back & Reading the history of England, the Ice drove out at ferry the Morning of the 18th without any damage to peers or wings, tho it has been Long waisting, If it had went off with a Suden thaw, I think it would Give their wing walls a trial


Feby 20th 1804 Wind S W & fine day at Sawmill till noon Cleaning Race & other repairs home to Dinner about 3 OC Jont Jones Spent the afternoon I walk to Ree Drakes they walling the well at Mothers stayd till 9 OC

21 Wind N & Large white frost, went with R Lewis Simon Lutzenburg & others afox hunting Beat the Bush from Righters ferry to Matson and never put one up Spent 11d at McConkeys & 111/4d at Widow Warners so home--

22 Wind N E & fine forenoon Over Cast & not so fine; at the Mill & Sawd one Log for Rees Price, afternoon Saml. Evans here Looking & Stateing his Duplicate he was Colector for 1801 & has never Settled it he is about 50 Dollars back & Got 88 to Colect too Easey to be Colector at Yerkus's with Saml. Evans no Stay, not froze at 9 OC-

23rd Wind N.E & blue very Cold & froze very hard, begun to Snow about 8 OClock at Rees Prices, puting wash board Garret Stairs home to Dinner then back to Rees's Spent 51/2 half Glass Gin, Snow hard at night

24th Wind N W high & Cold Snow Drifted much, I suppose 5 or 6 Inches deep black Ewe Got 2 Lams, Rattleneck 2 a week or more Bell Ewe 2 but one Died not very well Caut Cold, with Disbury at the widows to make a bargain to farm her place


February 25th 1804 Wind N W & very Cold Day high wind Custered the fuller Brought home our Linsey Molley paid him 19s2 for it the Boys & I Split & Sawd up all the wood we had at home for Burning Felix helpt to Clean the big Stable not been Cleand this Winter I dare say 4 or 5 Cart Loads in it at Yerkus's Spent 51/2 heard that Jacob Zell Badly hurt with the Wagon Gooing over him & Lays at the Tavern by the 2nd Gate--

26th Wind N W Clear & a Cold day thawd alittle in Sun, being first day at Meeting one Balding preached I used to know him he was superintendant on the pike road, afternoon Yerkus & I went to see Jacob Zell, he badly hurt his Ribs broke & Breast & face Much hurt, but I beleive he will Get up at Least I have hopes Spent Mug Beer 11d their & 2 pints at Yerkus s one before I went & the other when I came back, a Number of people to See him home to tee [tea] so so--


February 27th 1804 Wind about W. & Clear Morn appears as If it would be Somthing warmer it was afine day at the Mill & at Drakes they have done walling the Well, at David Roberts and at flag tavern 5 Mile Gate to See Jacob Zell he Rather Better so home to Dinner after at Rees Price's at work a Little Spent 1 Pint Beer home & Read till 9 OC so bed

28 Wind N E & very Cold Snowd first then Raind & Cleard up with Snow Shower about 9 O'C at night at Rees at panneling a door Viz flat pannel Except it is Raise about 1/8 of Inch without a beed, old fashion Reviv'd Jacob Zell [Long] here & stayd till 9 OC- he has Got under way & Makeing Money by farming, he sold 400 Dollars worth of hogs 20 fat, & Got the Cash in hand, but he kept them till February

29 Wind N by W & avery fine day was yesterday Interduced'd to General St Clair by Saml Jarvis, he Quite an Old man very Goutty been a Great Soldier tho Counted unfortunat Jarvis Married his daughter tho they have Parted Some time he avery Triffeling young man, a most Detestable Lyer, which has Rendered So Odious that Every body Ridecule. & despise's him, tho he dose not want for abilitys & has had fine Edication---


Feby. 29th 1804 Wind N W fine day tho Cold in the shade Sent for Poney horse from Rees Price's he had a month or more & put in Cart & halld 3 Loads of wood & two Loads of hay from yard Felix Cut 2 Chesnut trees & I help to saw off for Rails

March the 1st Wind N E. at Rees Price's at work till noon Dined their Snowd all day. & some Rain Roads Soft, afternoon up to John Bares & pick'd out 4 Chusnut [chestnut] trees on Janes Prices Land to Make abarrack, it Snowd very fast & hung to trees much, home about Dark Call not a Lit at no place till Returnd Got 10 Dollars of Rees Price & Gave them to the painter Weaver, that's painting new house in presence of Moses James Viz Rees Prices new house after night hail & Rain & Got Cold

2nd- Wind N & had snowd 8 or 9 Inches deep & keep at till near noon Wind N W & Cleard off very Cold & Drove the Snow much, the old Black Ewe 2 black Lambs, Spent 1s101/2 with B Tunis, made a rowler for hand towall &c &c at new house


March 3rd. 1804 Wind N W & very Cold indeed high wind, Spent 51/2 at Yerkus, afternoon took Ann George & Janes two Sons and went to Joe Walters & Thomas's Store in slay, 1 Gallon Molasses 7s- Sheose [shoes] for John 4s6, 4 lb Sugar 4s- Reasons [raisins] pins &c 2s61/2 the Lains very full hardly get along & the Snow drove amost anouff to Scear one, Some Low places woul[d] brake through, Cold night

4th Wind N W very Cold day with Snow Showers from W. being first day afternoon at Jacob Morris's awhile Horatio here In Evening two Wagons was on the pike near my house on turnpike the wagon run over one of the Drivers a Lad about 17 & Kill him dead before the other Came up he Drove, for one Hover in Lancaster County I used to know His team, Come to Enoch Jones for the Coffin--

5th Wind about S W & Moderated alittle tho over Cast-- yet keep up Sett of[f] to see the man that was killd & Spent 11d. I did not know him, attend to the funeral only 7 of us buryed him at our Strangers yard. Afternoon meet at School house Spent 2s4 so home


March 6th 1804 Wind N & Clear till noon & thawd over to see them Carry Jacob Zell home he hurt with a wagon above a week agoo & Layd at 5 Mile Tavern they Carryed him on a litter by men, Calld at Jont Jones he went along & seen him home then up buck Jones along Spent 51/2 then of[f] to John Horns to See Gravel about his old mare Calld at Cochrons Got dinner & some Cider 2 years this fall Coming he a fine generous harty old man in his 80 year, tho as Lively on foot as aboy So home before night freezing hard

Up with Charles Bevan, at Eliots Store about his deed, to Leadom home to Dinner. prety fine hay time this afternoon Molley Little John & I paid a visit to David Evans at Gate No. 2 turnpike, at David Roberts, they all makeing hay, being first day, those that have hay down most all at work; perhaps their was never Such a Serious time about hay Great quantitys will be & is Lost, R Jones halld a Great deal on (many others) on [repeated] the dung hill, I dare Say their never was so much hay Lost in one Season, Since the Settlement of the Provence, I think I Can Reme[m]ber 40 yrs back and never knowd my Father to Make hay on a first day I never Remember of him Loosing a 100 (hay)

Carrs H Knox Reap yesterday--

States Savage Custom, Hamilton was a man of the first abillity in U.S & had, Escape through the war, was Secretary of State &c &c he is much Lamented, by all I should hope but as to politicks he was in the Monority opposed to Jefferson Politicks, he was to be a great man, & is said to be opposed to dueling & did not fire at bur [Burr]
